- The Rock is closed Thanksgiving Day and New Year's Eve. Christmas Eve hours vary, so check before you go.
- The Rock sells one-hour time slots. Book online; walk-ups are rare.

Year-round skating at Northwoods
Ice and Golf Center at Northwoods is at 17530 Henderson Pass, 78232. Call (210) 490-9550.
- Public skate, from the rink's home page: every day 12:30 to 3 p.m., and Wednesday to Sunday 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Hours change with bookings, so check the schedule before you go.
- Rental skates come in toddler sizes 6 to 13 and youth 1 to adult 16, full sizes only.
- The center also has mini golf, a pro shop, a snack bar, birthday parties and youth hockey.
Skating lessons for kids
Learn to Skate at Northwoods starts at age 4.
- Snowplow I is the first class, for ages 4 to 6. Basic I is for ages 7 to 12, and there are teen and adult classes too.
- Helmets are required for Snowplow classes.
- Next session: 6 weeks, starting Wed., Nov. 4 (5:15 or 5:45 p.m.) or Sat., Nov. 7 (10:15 or 10:45 a.m.), 2026.
- Cost: $140 plus tax, with skate rental and 3 public skate passes.
- Skaters also need a Learn to Skate USA membership: $18.50 plus a $1.50 fee.
- Online registration opens Oct. 10, 2026.

Skating with little kids
Age rules and a few things that help.
- At The Rock, kids 12 and under need an adult on site, and kids 7 and under need an adult on the ice.
- Northwoods rents toddler skates starting at toddler size 6.
- In Northwoods lessons, skaters 4 to 6 need a helmet. A bike or inline helmet works.
- The Rock's rink is Glice, a synthetic surface, not real ice.
- Book holiday rink time slots online. At The Rock, walk-ups are rare.
